Opuntia fragilis (Keremeos form)
This form of our native prickly pear was found near Keremeos, BC. While the small (3 cm) yellow flowers are attractive enough, the stars of the show are the spines. Typically whitish during bloom time, as summer changes to autumn the spines darken to a warm, cinnamon-brown tone. In late afternoon, these plants become the showiest in the garden with their warm glow.
