Opuntia erinacea v. ursina (Grizzly Bear Cactus)
This is a striking cactus, as the pads become densely covered with very long, white spines. As the plant ages, some of the spines become threadlike, creating a wispy appearance. We think it looks more like a polar bear than a grizzly bear, but there are no polar bears in the Southwestern USA where the plant originates. When it comes into flower with its very large, pinkish-purple blooms, the effect is stunning. Does not appreciate wet winters. In regions colder than Zone 8, it is worth trying in a container.
