The Eastern prickly pear is one of the four species of cactus that are native to Canada. This species tolerates more water than most cactus. Smothered in lemon-yellow flowers over a long period in late spring, the glossy pads have fewer spines than most. Abundant, succulent red fruit in fall persists over winter and is best removed in late winter to avoid rotting and marking the pads.
